Home Care in Medway: Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham Explained

Ask someone from Rochester where they live and they will say Rochester, not Medway. Ask someone from Chatham, and it is Chatham. Gillingham the same. Medway is the name on the council paperwork, the unitary authority that covers all three towns and Strood besides, but it is not how people who actually live there talk about home. So when a family rings us and says they need home care "somewhere in Medway", one of the first things we ask, gently, is which bit.

That question matters more than it sounds. Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham sit close together on the map, but they are three separate high streets and three separate communities, and for someone who has lived on one of those streets for forty years, the difference between "near the cathedral" and "up by the football ground" is the difference between feeling at home and feeling lost. In this article I want to talk honestly about what home care across Medway actually looks like: the three towns, Medway Maritime Hospital, the real choice between hourly visits and live-in care, and how we cover it all from our office in Gravesend.

Medway Is Three Towns, Not One

We have worked across Medway for a good while now, and the thing I say to every new team member is this: never treat it as one patch. Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham run into each other geographically, but they do not feel the same, and families notice instantly if you get it wrong.

Rochester

Rochester is the old town: the cathedral, the castle, the high street with the timber-framed buildings Dickens used to walk past. A good number of our Rochester customers are in the streets around the historic centre or just off the Maidstone Road, and several have lived there long enough to remember the town before the tourists arrived.

Chatham

Chatham has a different character entirely: the old naval dockyard, now Chatham Historic Dockyard and a university campus, alongside a busy high street and the Pentagon shopping centre. It is more built-up and more mixed, and the carers who work there tend to know it as a working town rather than a picture-postcard one.

Gillingham

Gillingham is largely residential, home to Priestfield and Gillingham Football Club, with streets of Victorian terraces running back from the high street towards the river. Medway Maritime Hospital sits on its edge, which matters enormously for the families we support there, as I will come to.

Medway Maritime Hospital and Coming Home Safely

Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham is the acute hospital for the whole of Medway, and a good number of the calls we get start there: a parent has had a fall, a hip has been operated on, and the family is told discharge is coming within days. It is worth knowing that adult social care in Medway runs through Medway Council rather than Kent County Council, because Medway is its own unitary authority even though we still think of it, rightly, as Kent. If your loved one needs a care needs assessment before or after discharge, Medway Council's adult social care team is who to ask, and there is often a period of reablement support available first: free, short-term help designed to get someone back on their feet rather than straight into ongoing care.

We would always encourage a family to try that route first if it is offered. Good home care is not about doing everything for someone; it is about doing only what is genuinely needed, so a parent keeps dressing themselves, keeps making their own cup of tea, keeps as much of their old routine as is safely possible. Where reablement is not enough, or the discharge date arrives faster than an assessment can keep up, that is where we can usually step in with our own assessment and a proper care plan.

Hourly Visits or Live-in Care Across a Spread-Out Patch

One practical thing families do not always think about is geography. Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham are close by car, but a spread of appointments, a GP surgery in one town and a pharmacy in another, a daughter in Chatham while her mother is in Gillingham, all of that adds up once care is delivered in short visits.

Hourly visits work well when someone needs help at specific points in the day: getting up, lunch, medication, getting to bed. A carer arrives, does what is needed, and the rest of the day belongs to your loved one. The difficulty comes when the gaps between visits stop feeling safe, when nights are unsettled or a fall could happen unseen for hours.

That is usually the moment live-in care starts to make more sense. A live-in carer removes the timing problem altogether: no visit to schedule around traffic on the A2 or the one-way system through Chatham, just someone there, in the home, with proper rest built into their own day. We offer both hourly domiciliary care visits and live-in care across Medway, and for some families supported living is the better fit again. We will tell you honestly which one suits your situation, not just the one that suits us.

How We Cover Medway from Gravesend

Our office is in Gravesend, and I know that on a map Medway can look like the other side of the county. In practice it is a patch we have covered for years, so I would rather be straightforward about how it works than pretend our office is round the corner.

What actually makes it work is not the office address, it is who we recruit. Wherever we can, we match customers in Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham with carers who live locally, in or near Medway, people who already know the streets, the surgeries and the pharmacies rather than someone learning the area on your parent's doorstep. That local knowledge matters on an ordinary Tuesday, and it matters more when something needs sorting quickly.

We have written separately about how this works in Gravesend and in Dartford, and if you want the wider county picture, our guide to Home Care in Kent: How to Choose Well covers all of it, Medway included.

How to Start

You do not need to know the right words before you ring us. Most families who call have never arranged care before and are not sure whether they need half an hour a day or something much bigger. That is exactly what the first conversation is for.

We will ask about your loved one as a person first: their routine, what matters to them, what worries you most, before we talk about hours or costs. If it makes sense, we will visit them at home in Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham or anywhere else across Medway for a proper, unhurried assessment, with no obligation attached. If home care with us is not the right answer for your family, we will say so honestly and point you towards something that is.
